With their dense, clay-based soils, Chassagne’s lower lying climats are ideally suited to reds. This wine comes from a 1.06-hectare plot in the middle of the village. Olivier worked with roughly 80% whole bunches, aging this cuvée in used barrels. There were no sulphur additions until bottling. Typical of Chassagne rouge, this is a deep, powdery, structured red that will take some time. A terrific example.
“The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet La Goujonne Rouge is aged with 80% whole bunch this year. This has an open and expressive bouquet with cranberry and crushed strawberry scents. Fine delineation and focused, the stems are neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip. There is something a little Loire-like on the finish, and I write that not in a negative way, with touches of black pepper on the lingering aftertaste. Very delicious.” 90 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Relatively modest colour. A nose that’s very forward and slightly cushioned. Scale, dark-red fruit, tons of complexity – slowly fading with a well-judged sweetness, balanced with some whole bunch complexity. A delicious, excellent wine.” Bill Nanson, The Burgundy Report
